Continuity Assumptions in Cake-Cutting

چکیده

In important papers on cake-cutting – one of the key areas in fair division and resource allocation – the measuretheoretical fundamentals are not fully correctly given. It is not clear (i) which family of sets should be taken for the pieces of cake, (ii) which set-functions should be used for evaluating the pieces, and (iii) which is the relationship between various continuity properties appearing in cake-cutting. We show that probably the best choice for the familiy of subsets of [0, 1] is the Borel σ-algebra and for the setfunction any ‘sliceable’ Borel measure. At least in dimension one it does not make sense to work with only finitely additive contents on finite unions of intervals. For the continuity property we see two possibilities. The weaker is the traditional divisibility property, which is equivalent to being atom-free. The stronger is simply absolute continuity with respect to Lebesgue measure. We also consider the case of a base set (cake or pie) more general than [0, 1].

Truthful Cake Cutting Mechanisms with Externalities: Do Not Make Them Care for Others Too Much!

We study truthful mechanisms in the context of cake cutting when agents not only value their own pieces of cake but also care for the pieces assigned to other agents. In particular, agents derive benefits or costs from the pieces of cake assigned to other agents. This phenomenon is often referred to as positive or negative externalities. We propose and study the following model: given an alloca...

Envy-free two-player mm-cake and three-player two-cake divisions

Cloutier, Nyman, and Su (Mathematical Social Sciences 59 (2005), 26–37) initiated the study of envy-free cake-cutting problems involving several cakes. The classical result in this area is that when there are q players and one cake, an envy-free cake-division requiring only q − 1 cuts exists under weak and natural assumptions. Among other results, Cloutier, Nyman, and Su showed that when there ...

Truth, Justice, and Cake Cutting

Cake cutting is a common metaphor for the division of a heterogeneous divisible good. There are numerous papers that study the problem of fairly dividing a cake; a small number of them also take into account self-interested agents and consequent strategic issues, but these papers focus on fairness and consider a strikingly weak notion of truthfulness. In this paper we investigate the problem of...

Cake Cutting: Envy and Truth

We study envy-free cake cutting with strategic agents, where each agent may manipulate his private information in order to receive a better allocation. We focus on piecewise constant utility functions and consider two scenarios: the general setting without any restriction on the allocations and the restricted setting where each agent has to receive a connected piece. We show that no determinist...
